“Bitch,” she muttered just under her breath as she came abreast of me in the hallway, sure I could not quite hear her. The disdainful squeezing of her eyes said it all though.
I slowly moved away. I could feel her scowl on my back as I took my position by my open classroom door. I turned and greeted her with my usual handshake and cheery good morning. Her morning wasn’t good and she let me know that as she lazily sauntered past me to claim her seat. I would try again tomorrow. I think that each sunrise illuminates a chance to try again, a new day, a new world and that was the only tool I knew how to employ with her.
However much she wanted to, she didn’t deter me. As much as I believe in the promise of a new day, I also believe in teenagers. I believe in their power, their confusion, their bravado and their passion. I have been teaching high school for 24 years now — I am well past my own teenage angst, yet I live teenage every day. I can almost breathe in their fears and joys. They don’t scare me; rather they remind me that life is terribly beautiful and deeply fragile at the same time.
I knew that this young woman’s father had just been arrested for possession of cocaine and she was vainly attempting to pretend that her crazy life was normal. Her anger was a facade. She wasn’t aiming for me exactly; I was just the one closest. I continued to smile at her each day, to encourage her to submit her poetry (the only thing she thought she could do well) to our literary magazine. I worried about her each night and continued to demand that she participate each day. And I smiled.
Then one day, she didn’t show up at my classroom door. Of course, calls home went unanswered. I had a cell phone number and left as many messages as I could during the next several days. She did eventually return, even more sullen and withdrawn. She never spoke about what happened. She did manage to make it to graduation and then left my life to try and shape her own. I could do nothing more than watch her walk away under the dimming lights of our football field. The wilted crepe paper roses floated disconsolately in her wake.
Five years later, she appeared in my empty afternoon classroom. She held an inquisitive tow-headed toddler loosely on her jutting hip. She aimed her jaw at me in that familiar angry attitude and asked me if I remembered her.
“Amber!” I was delighted and moved toward her to shake her hand. She rearranged her little girl and embraced me in an awkward hug.
Slowly, she told me about her life. She’d moved away from our small town, gotten pregnant, married, and then quickly divorced. She and her daughter lived in California in a tiny trailer. She was working full time and attending community college at night. She lifted her chin, her face filled with pride and strength and then she apologized about the name calling and anger. She told me that she thought of my smile often when she was tired and wondered why I never wrote her off as so many others did.
I locked eyes with her and her adorable daughter and said, “This is exactly why not.” As she left that dusky afternoon, she offhandedly presented me a copy of a small journal published by her college. It contained two of her poems.
Teenagers matter. They may seem surly, disconnected or withdrawn, but I believe in them. They will eventually grow up. Their bravado probably won’t last, but how I treat them does. I believe in teenagers and there’s a framed poem hanging on the wall behind my desk just in case I ever forget to smile.

ReplyDeleteThe teacher that impacted me the most was my 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Hemingway. I was falling behind in class because i had the flu and i missed two weeks of school and she would always be on my case about homework and stuff and made sure i passed and graduated to 7th grade.
A teacher that impacted my life was my kindergarten teacher. I entered kindergarten around December and i didn't speak english. She helped me understand everything she taught by explaining it in spanish and then again in english. She was the best teacher for all she did for me.

The teacher that made an impact on my life is Mr. Gonzalez. When I was a freshman, I was careless and I didn't care about my grades. Sophomore year, when I came home with two "D"s on my progress report, I got my ass chewed. I was grounded with NO electronic privelages and no freinds. It was the worst time i've had in my life. Towards second semester, I wanted to change my grades and one of the classes I was doing poorly in was Biology. I went in at tutorial to get help from Mr. Gonzalez and we sat down and discussed my grades. He gave me motivation and and my grades started to improve. If I had a problem, I turned to him and he was there to help. The first semester of sophomore year I had a 2.8 GPA.. The end of second semester, I had a 3.7 GPA. Now I know what I want to do in my future when a year ago, I didn't care. I have scholarship applications lined up and a list of colleges I am going to visit and apply to.

there was a teacher in my life that i would be able to go and talk to him about anything. He was always there for me and was the only teacher that i had ever cried in front of.There was no one that i would be able to talk to not my family nor my friends. His name is Mr. Chop he may have been my history teacher and i hate that class but just the thought of him teaching it made my life better. So i understand how that teacher made an impact on her.

ReplyDeleteA teacher who made an impact on my life was my 7th grade math teacher, Mr. Winders. I am good at math and he saw that, but he also saw that I was trying less and less as the school year progressed. He helped me get back on my work and prevent my grades from slipping.
The teacher that had impacted my life is my teacher from 1st year high school, Ms Glaiza. She taught me alot and she cared for me when i was sick in the dorms. She was the one that bought me to hospital and stayed with me when my parents were not there yet even though it was already very late.

ReplyDeletea teacher that impacted my life the most was my 7th grade teacher he talked alot about future things he does thing seriously while making it fun at the same time, everytime we did something wrong he would talk for a long time of why we should have done that
The teacher who has made a difference in my life is a lady named Mrs. Marshall. She like so many growing up I knew personally as her son Nick was my best friend. Throughout the years, he and I were inseperable. His mother and mine both worked at a private school and we were in a class full of "teacher kids." Even though Mrs. Marshall was not the first teacher I knew in and out of school she is the one who made the greatest impact in who I am. She always cared and encouraged us to learn knew things. When I started to fall behind in her class she reminded me that while we were friends I still had to work and she taught me the "school" lesson the hard way.
ReplyDeleteNick's dad Mr. Marshall, also a teacher (at Marina High! yeah!)had a large impaact in my life too. He would always teach Nick more about math and science and then Nick would attempt to teach me.
Both of the Marshall teachers had great impacts in my life I wouldn't be here without them.

ReplyDeleteJack Edwards, he now lies in a cemetary somewhere. He might be forgotten, he might not. Most thought he was just a fat mean guy, and he was. But when you go to know him, joke around with him, he was a great friend. He was my middle school physical education teacher, and it was kinda ironic that he was a p.e teacher, and was large. He always made me laugh with our inside jokes, and always told me to stay active, and to go for what i wanted. The last time i saw him was at my little brothers parent conference, i happened to roll my ankle right before i entered the door. So he told my little brother what to do, so it wouldnt hurt and swell up as much. That was the last time i ever saw him, he died with a heart of lung problem im not quite sure. He was a good man, and i remember everything he told me and everyting that i can achive as long as i do my best.
Jack Edwards, rest in peace.
The theacher that made an impact on my life is Mrs. Morrissey when ever someone needed something or needed someone to talk to she was always there for us. She would give us advice on what were the right shoices for us to make in life. Eventhough she was my math teacher and she was a great teacher in teaching and expalining something that we didn't understand she was more like a friend. Who always had a smile in her face and always made everyone smile even if we were having a bad day.

ReplyDeleteThe teacher who impacted my life the most was Mrs.Morrissey. I knew her since i was in 6th grade. I got to know her more in 8th grade though. I would get in trouble alot in my P.E class and in leadership class so she was the one that was always there for me. They kicked me out of leadership class so she was the one who said I could be her aid. When I would be in her class she would always give me advice and just make me laugh. Mrs.Morrissey impacted my life.
ReplyDeleteHe's so cool that even he's last name was cool!
ReplyDeleteMr.Cooley!!! He was the one that proved me that hard work does come at the end. He always knew that i had something to give. Not only as a student but as for myself too. In 8th grade i wasnt as confident as i am now. He showed me that if i was confortable with myself i would be comfortable with my surroundings as well. It's something that i really appreciate and value to this day. My self-esteem(: all thanks to Mr. Cooley.
A teacher that made an impact on my life was my Mrs. Mendoza. She was a very nice lady who always helped me in anything i needed. she helped me stay in el viento.Always very nice to everyone. i wasnt really into her class but i always tryed to pay attention, but it was history. That subject didnt really interset me. But mrs. mendoza always tired to help me. when we had el viento tutorial she would help me on the homework for history. She helped me pass the class. I did end up learning a lot thanks to her i know some historic things now and i am able to pay attention a little more in US history.

As a teacher she did everything she could to help everybody, but when she wasnt teaching, she is a great person and always gives you advises in life. My friends and I always went into her room during break and lunch just to hear her tell her stories about her life and how it impacts you later in the future. I havent talked to her since eighth grade but one day I am going to my middle school just to visit her.
